What Do I Do for Audition?

Family Friendly Productions

What do you do for the audition?!

First of all, relax! We’re fun, friendly, and flexible — casual, informal, and very accustomed to figuring out your basic abilities quickly and easily. We’re good at “winging it” and helping you do the same.

Over the past 11 years, each semester of our homeschool co-op drama production classes, we’ve had zero time to waste. When new kids came to the class, we had to assess their experience and abilities right away, but always with a gentle approach because some of those soon-to-be actors and/or singers were totally inexperienced and some were not even sure they wanted to be there.

As the writer/director, I’m told I’m very good at getting people in the “right spot.” Since it’s all my material, I can customize the script and songs to fit the actors and singers I have. That’s what Family Friendly Productions is all about — being able to customize a script to fit the group you have!

If you’ve got talent — if you’re good at acting and/or singing and/or dancing — we’ll discover that real fast and be delighted to spotlight your abilities. Believe me, we’re looking for the best talent we can find.

But, if you’re not so experienced, and you’re here to “give this a try,” that’s great — as long as you have the desire to do well and have fun and be coachable, you’ll be fine. We’ll get you “in the right spot.”

Is acting your “main thing”? That’s great — though we need some good singers, you don’t have to be able to sing. A number of our leading roles don’t have to sing.

We’ll have you read a few lines from the play — we’ll coach you through a short situation or two in the script — it’ll be fun — and we’ll figure out your capabilities pretty quickly. And we’ll find out more about you throughout rehearsals, hopefully for future productions.

Do you sing? If you have a song you know and like and want to sing part of it for us, that’s great. We’ll have the keyboard and the guitar, or you can do it acappella. Bring the music or you can even email us your choice in advance. Actually, something simple will work just fine — a church or camp song — something familiar to most people. If you’re not sure, we’ll help you out. We just need to get an idea of your basic ability and range. We’ll be looking to find out who is a “good group singer” and who is a promising soloist.

Do you dance? We’ll talk about your experience and you can show us some moves if you wish. We do tend to keep our choreography “doable” and fairly simple since you are usually also singing — and we’ve found simple choreography can be quite effective. But I’m all for spotlighting talent and I’m able to adjust to just about anything.

Basically, we want this to be fun for all of us!
